The first thing you need when you organize your quilt room is a system! Decide on a system and then think about the space you have and how to make the most out of that space. Fabric and notions need a lot of storage options! So I’ve outlined and linked products for how I organize my quilt room.
organize your fabric
I created a cutting table that is tall enough so that I don’t have to hunch over when cutting but also has tons of storage underneath! I used several cube storage shelves to create the base of my cutting table and then added top to it.
I then add baskets or bins to the cube shelves to put all my fabric scraps into. I like to organize my scraps by color and if it is a solid or print. Here is what I used.
organize your notions & Tools
I really recommend keeping things minimal when you organize your quilting room. Keeping things to a minimum helps me to be more creative when I am not surrounded by clutter. The clutter is too noisy in my brain! Anyone else? So, I like to keep things simple. I have some draws in my sewing table that I put a small bobbin base in and loose threads I use the most. And then I use a larger plastic organization bin to put all my other threads in.
Let’s not forget to take care of those rulers that we love so much! My favorite way to keep these organized is with a wooden quilt ruler holder. I have a custom made one from my Father-In-Law, but these ones from Amazon are a budget friendly alternative that are sure to get the job done just as well!
ORGANIZE WIPS
Once again, I recommend that when you organize your quilt room, you take the time to think about your WIPS and determine if they still bring you joy or if you’d rather donate or swap with someone else. For the projects that you do want to keep, you can use the baskets or bins like I link to above or use a clear organizer on the back of a door, like this one:
catalog quilt projects
Start cataloging all of your quilts, both the complete and incomplete ones! Download the MY QUILTS APP, which is free to use, and start uploading all your projects. This app is easy to use and allows you to add photos, important information, and even journal entries for each project. Add WIPS too by adding progress photos and what stage of the project you are on! This way you know exactly what is left in your WIP pile and which one you want to work on next.
