In our home, summertime is marked by popsicles in the freezer! If your kids are like mine, they don’t like to hold onto the freezing cold popsicle with their bare hands. So, instead of using a paper towel- here is a super fun and easy tutorial to make a popsicle holder for your little ones! These only take about 15 minutes to make!
Here's what you need
You don’t need much to make these super cute Popsicle Holders! Some scraps and some tools and you’re ready to go!
- Exterior Fabric: (1) 2.5″ x 6″ and (1) 2.5″ x 5.5″
- Interior Fabric: (1) 2.5″ x 6″ and (1) 2.5″ x 5.5″
- Batting (I used Insulbrite): (1) 2.5″ x 6″ and (1) 2.5″ x 5.5″
- Binding cut at 2.25″
I used all scraps and leftover binding from another project! This fabric is from my Fruitful fabric line with Moda.
TIP: Consider the width of your preferred popsicles! If they are wider than 2″, increase the width of your fabric and batting cuts!
popsicle holder Panels
The first step in making the Popsicle Holder is to layer your pieces, just as you would a “quilt sandwich”. Layer all of the 6″ long pieces together with the exterior face down, batting, and interior face up. Do the same thing with all of the 5.5″ long pieces.
Clip or pin your “sandwich” around the edges to keep everything together and in line.
The 6″ sandwich is the Back Panel and the 5.5″ sandwich is the Front Panel.
Bind one of the short edges of the Front Panel (5.5″ long). I use a machine binding method, which you can find here on my blog.
Once you are done binding that edge, clip the excess off so that the edges are even.
Binding the Popsicle Holder
Lay your Front Panel on top of your Back Panel, making sure the interior fabrics are RST. Align the bottom short edges and clip in place.
Now all you have to do to complete your Popsicle Holder is to bind the edges. This can be a bit tricky as it is a pretty small item (unlike a large quilt that you may be used to).
- Turn your Popsicle Panels over so that the back is facing up.
- Starting as close to corner as possible, align the raw edges of your binding with the raw edges of your Popsicle Holder pieces. Start sewing the binding down all the way around until you round the final corner.
- Stop as soon as you round the corner and connect the ends in your preferred way.
- Continue sewing the remaining edge of binding down.
- Turn the Popsicle Holder over so that the Front Panel is now facing up. Flip the binding over to the front and topstitch down, hiding the first sew line that you made from the back.
