I’d like to introduce my next quilt pattern, Paper Planes! And like my last pattern, Evolve, this one has a bit of back story and meaning as well! This pattern has several significant meanings to me and to our family.
There was a particularly drab day during this past winter when our family was all feeling a bit stir crazy and on each others’ nerves. My husband and I decided to have a family activity of making paper airplanes out of construction paper. Everyone got right to work! Once each child and parent presented their paper airplane for inspection, we obviously had to race them against each other. The competitions began inside, but we quickly moved out back where we could throw the planes off the back deck. We really get some height and distance off those guys! Even though it was a cold and overcast kind of day, it ended up being a great memory for our family.
Why did we make paper airplanes? Well, airplanes have been a big topic of conversation around our home lately as my husband has been training for his Private Pilot’s License. It’s been a dream of his for awhile, not for any useful reason or career change- just for fun! And now seemed as good as any other time to just go for it! So he got an instructor (who happens to be one of his best friends- lucky him!) and has been working his butt off. Just last week, he passed his written exam and can begin logging hours of flying time! I am so proud of him and am excited for him to add this new skill to his repertoire.
And so… the Paper Planes quilt pattern was born.
What Does It Mean?
After pouring my heart and soul into my Evolve quilt pattern and all the symbolism behind it, I knew immediately what this new quilt would mean to me. Once we evolve and change, there comes a time when we must act. The year 2020 was a year of being acted upon. But the year 2021 is the year we gather ourselves up and we push forward and take flight! My family and business has done a lot of changing in the past year and I can feel the momentum “under my wings”. I know that good things are happening and that change is good! So I can’t wait to see what new heights we soar to in this upcoming year.
Paper Planes Pattern Testers
My husband likes to joke that over the past 10 years I have made dozens of quilts and none of them were for him. So, I made this one for him! I wanted to keep it very masculine and neutral looking! I absolutely LOVE how it turned out! But behind every good pattern writer, there is an amazing team of pattern testers!
