The Evergreen pattern is my very first scrappy pattern that I’ve written. I typically have a pretty difficult time wrapping my head around making something scrappy! I like things to coordinate and flow. So when I do make a scrappy quilt, it’s usually more difficult than a regular pattern because of how much organizing I put into it. Organized chaos is what I like to call it!
Fabrics used
The first thing, and perhaps my favorite part of the quilting process, is choosing colors for a quilt! I typically sew with solids, so most of my scraps are solid. For the Evergreen pattern I knew I wanted to mix blues and greens. Art Gallery Fabrics has a great variety of dusty and blue-green tones! Luckily for me, I had a bunch of them already. Here is a list of the colors I used:
- Hunter Fields
- Balsam Fir
- Rosemary
- Eucalyptus
- Patina Green
- Fresh Sage
- Sprout
- Evergreen
- Zambia Stone
- Spruce
- Ocean Fog
- Northern Waters
- Mediterraneo
- Night Sea
- Nocturnal
I made the scrappy background version, but I also used scrappy tone-on-tone white fabrics I had for the trees. So you can totally make both scrappy!
Organizing your chaos
If you are like me, and need order and organization in your quilting, then perhaps you will like my method. It will certainly take a bit longer, but the results are fool-proof!
When you are making the Evergreen pattern I arranged the cutting instructions from top of the block to bottom of the block (incase you wanted an ombre effect like I did). Divide up your fabric scraps by colors and decide which colors you want where in your trees.
Here is where it gets tricky. Divide the amount of cuts you need for each size by the number of colors you want or have in that size. Be sure to make an even number of cuts per color.
I sewed all my background/tree strips together first and then laid everything out to make sure that I distributed colors and fabrics evenly (can’t let same fabrics touch, obviously, haha)!
Evergreen
I love that this pattern allows for so much variation! You can make it your own! And because it has so many pieces, you get to use up a lot of your scraps!
I chose the name, Evergreen, because it implies something that never goes out of style or looses its beauty. I love nature, quilting, and greens and blues, but this quilt looks amazing in a variety of color palettes.
This pattern could be a seasonal or holiday quilt, but it could also be an all-year-round pattern! It is as evergreen as the trees it is named after.
You can color your own versions of this quilt and all my other quilts on Quilt Ink! It’s free to use and you can make as many color versions of any quilt pattern! It’s seriously so fun!
